Why do we call ourselves Overqualified?
In 2004, two Harvard grads in LA with aspirations in the entertainment industry faced the everyday challenge of paying their bills. Much to their surprise, they were rejected by a wide variety of food service jobs for one simple reason: they were “overqualified.” Deciding to use their education as an asset rather than a liability they started working for a variety of tutoring agencies.
They quickly realized that, rather than teaching the material, most of the tutors at those other agencies were just doing their students’ homework. Students were doing well on their homework but lacked the understanding to ace their tests and gain the genuine benefit that a great education provides.
At the same time, on the East coast, two other Harvard grads were also pursuing their passions. One was working in public service, the other in the performing arts, and both were former teachers interested in finding alternative teaching methods to connect with students.
In the summer of 2005, the four heroes of our story formed Overqualified, LLC. All had spent time teaching in some capacity during high school and college, and now they were eager to share their experiences to help others gain the opportunities they enjoyed in higher education. And so, Overqualified was born in LA and NY. We’re glad to be earning our keep doing something we love. Our clients are glad too.
